When I was younger back in the early 2000s I remember playing a Nintendo DS game called B-17 Flying Fortress that let you play as all the gunner positions. Listening to the background callouts of “Bandits! 6 0-clock High!” and “Fighters coming around fast!” I knew it was the audio used in that game. Really takes me back to my childhood.

Love this plane man
It was out of date by the time the US entered the war. Designed in 1935 as a coastal anti-submarine patrol aircraft, it was not suited to the mass raids over Europe, but they had to make do. It had half the bomb load of a Lancaster and required more crew, whereas the Lancaster only needed one pilot. Pretty soon the 8th started removing the upper and lower turrets and crew from the B17 so they could carry more bombs or fuel. The Liberator addressed many of the deficiencies, but unlike the Lancaster, neither could be trimmed to fly themselves in level flight. This resulted in exhausted pilots and so fewer missions. Reports abound of Lancasters flying home with a dead pilot and the radio operator doing the honours until they were over home soil and the survivors bailed out.

Good video. I've known of the Ohka since less than the age of ten. I also knew that American sailors nicknamed it the Baka Bomb. All the rest of your information is new to me. Thank you for putting this video together! (I recall reading many years ago--somewhere, I don't know where--that there is no known account of an Ohka hitting a U.S. Navy ship. This may have been disinformation, as I probably read it in the late 1950's or early 1960's) Thank you for making this video! Andy McKane, Maunaloa, Hawaii.

My dad was stationed at Deopham Green in England during WW2. He worked on B-17's as a sheet metal repair specialist.. He told my lot's of story's of airplanes coming back with big chunks missing.. I have an altimeter from a B-17 my dad got from some kind of surplus store after the war..
There are many RUclips videos showing how to prepare and start WWII fighters. I find that this is the most concise and easy to follow and understand than the others I have watched. This is a wonderful video about an equally wonderful airplane. Thank you.
